The Tri-Loppet features two basic competition categories – Relay Teams and Individuals:
Relay Teams: Relay teams may consist of two to four participants. Participants compete in a relay format, with one to two paddlers, one runner and one biker. Note that team members are allowed to do more than one leg of a relay. For example, a paddler may do the run or bike as well as the paddle.
- General Relay Team: The members of a general relay team do not need to have any special relationship. They do not need to be in the same family or work for the same company. For awards, the general relay teams are broken up into male, female and mixed (at least one male and one female competing).
- Minnesota Parent Family Relay Team: All members of a family team must be in one family – with at least two generations represented. The grand prize for the first family relay team is a trip to Maplelag Resort.
- True North Adventure Corporate Relay Team: All members of a corporate team must work for one company. The grand prize for the top Corporate Relay Team is a free True North Academy session designed to build team performance for your company.
Individual Categories: Anyone completing the entire event (whether in a canoe or kayak, whether paddling solo or with a partner) competes in the Individual Category. (Note that this is different than in years past when there was a Doubles and a Solo Category). Within the Individual Category, there are distinctions for men and women and, for the first time in 2011, there will be age class awards (19 and under, 20-29, 30-39 . . . 70+). The overall top individual prizes go to the first individual category man and first individual category woman across the finish line. The top prize for the top individual man is two spots on a Wilderness Inquiry Apostle Islands 3-day trip. The top prize for the top individual woman is two spots on a Wilderness Inquiry Superior Hike and Explore trip.
